The usage, rather than the quantity is what determines the "need" for a RAID controller. I realize that's an inferior solution, but bear in mind, this server has five users and about three concurrent users. The server does not have a RAID controller installed hence, I will be doing a software mirror. I think that's the way for me to go.Īnything with multiple ISO downloads will be too early of a version to work with 2012. I really appreciate the link to the single-image SMTD.

I simply loaded the WS 2003 SBS that I had on hand and everything turned out fine.Ģ008 (and later) is easier, as it has more native drivers than 2003. Do you have a RAID controller installed?įunny, I didn't worry about any of this a few years ago when we bought the server from Dell without an OS.

SMTD is not needed, but if you install directly from the OS media, the chipset driver may not be what you need either. Why does it say this? What's supposed to happen? Is it supposed to allow me to create a driver disk that I can use during OS installation? I downloaded the former, and when I run the executable on the server (in the current WS 2003 config), it says the file is valid, but it's intended for a different machine type. I assume that means the Dell OS Driver Pack and the Intel 5500/5520 Chipset Sottware Installation Utility. Someone on this forum suggested using the Dell chipset and driver pack.

I realize there are other ways to skin the cat. The only version that will work for 2012 R2 on a 2900 is 7.4, which is a single ISO download: If you are downloading two images, then you are downloading the wrong one. I don't have it, and when I try to download it from Dell, it downloads Image 2 but refuses to download Image 1. Want to do a clean install on the two new hard drives, with a software RAID mirror.ĭo you not have a RAID controller installed?ĭell recommends using their Systems Management Tools and Documentation media to install the OS.
Just in case the original post wasn't clear and/or I misunderstood the actual situation: Personally, I would consider returning it. You can't buy it separately, so I would be VERY wary of what you just purchased and from whom. You can only buy a "Dell OEM version" of Windows from Dell AND preinstalled on a server. Recently bought the Dell OEM version of WS 2008 R2 SP1 from a third-party vendor Any advice on the easiest way to achieve my goal would be greatly appreciated. Why does it say this? Recently bought the Dell OEM version of WS 2008 R2 SP1 from a third-party vendor, as well as two 1TB hard drives and additional memory from Dell.
